About the Beaufort scale
The Beaufort scale was created in 1805 by Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort of the Royal Navy. Weather forecasts in the UK still use Beaufort forces for shipping forecasts. Force 8 and above triggers gale warnings; Force 10 and above triggers storm warnings.
